Postling - 0745hrs - warm, sunny, light airs - A stunning morning with a cobalt blue sky and light airs, perfect conditions for tramping across the downs for the final RSPB Farmland Bird Survey visit. The downland section of the farm had good numbers of Yammers, Whitethroats, Skylarks and Linnets, all with recently fledged young out and about. Also of note Spotted Flycatchers (plus juvs), Buzzard, Hobby, Peregrine, Bullfinch, Willow Warbler, Long-tailed Tit, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers and best of all a singing Quail in a field of linseed. Barney flushed a Badger snuffling around in oil-seed-rape and got the shock of his life!
Butterflies totalled 16 species, including loads of Marbled Whites, a late Orange Tip, Ringlet, Common Blue, Painted Lady and a 95% Dark Green Fritillary (boy, can they shift).
RSPB - pm - A scan from the ramp delivered the GWE, Little Gull, Beardies, 3 Hobbies and a Cuckoo. On ARC, two each of Dunlin, Green Sand and Greenshank.
