Winter Solstice

Dungeness - 0830hrs - mild, sunny, sw2 - A stunning start to the shortest day of the year with sunshine throughout and a mild south-westerly airflow. A short seawatch from the hide, with BB, resulted in the expected comings and goings offshore of auks, divers, Gannets and Kittiwakes. Only other noteworthy event was a Merlin flying around the old light chasing a Mipit, and the Glaucous Gull was at the boats.
ARC - 1200hrs - Nothing much from Hanson, apart from the Gwegret and distant Wigeons. Plenty of invertebrate activity in the warm sunshine with several bumble bees and loads of small flying insects on the wing.
Littlestone - 1500hrs - Finished off the day with cracking views of two Short-eared Owls hunting the rough grassland behind the Romney Bay Hotel, a Merlin and 5 Corn Buntings going to roost
Elsewhere, the Rough-legged Buzzard was reported at West Hythe.
