A passage of Terns

Dungeness - 0900-1230hrs - cold, dry, sunny, ne 5 - With a return in the wind direction back to a blasting easterly seawatching was pretty much a lost cause. However, an hour in the seawatching hide did deliver our third species of diver of the week, a distant Black-throated, plus, Fulmar, Kittiwake, Med Gull, and a few auks, Barwits and Whimbrels. A steady flow of Commic and Sandwich Terns passed up-Channel throughout and continued whilst we were at the Patch involving several hundred birds. At the Patch a couple of hundred mainly Common, Black-headed and Herring Gulls, plus a 1st summer Little Gull and two Med Gulls. At least five porpoises were feeding offshore.
In summary the guests had a pretty wide range of 130 species during the week, around the Marsh and Low Weald, with the highlights being: Black-throated and Great Northern Divers, Spoonbill, Garganey, Great White Egret, Little Stint, Long-eared and Barn Owls, Ring Ouzel, Nightingales, Yellow Wagtails, Tree Sparrows and Corn Buntings.
And not forgetting that memorable day in France...
